Abuja, October 14, 2024 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Methodist Church in Nigeria to remain unwavering in their prayers for the nation, emphasizing that their spiritual support is a source of strength and guidance for the country. The President made this appeal during the 40th-anniversary celebration of the Abuja Archdiocese of the Methodist Church, held at the Methodist Cathedral of Unity, Wuse Zone 5.
Represented by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the church for its continued prayers for the country, saying, “I urge you to remain steadfast in your commitment to prayer—not just for your communities but for our beloved Nigeria and its leaders. Your prayers are a source of strength and guidance as we navigate the complexities of governance.”
The President also encouraged the church to maintain its outreach and service mission, stressing the importance of working together with the government to meet the aspirations of Nigerians through the “Renewed Hope Agenda.” He added that the challenges facing Nigeria today require a united front, stating, “The challenges we face as a nation require a united front. Your church can be a platform for social transformation, where individuals come together to enact change, promote peace, and uplift the people.”
He commended the Methodist Church for its role in promoting peace and unity across Nigeria during its 182 years of existence, particularly through messages of love, reconciliation, and understanding. “The Church has been instrumental in promoting peace and unity in our nation, and your messages have fostered dialogue among diverse communities, encouraging us to embrace our differences and work towards a common good,” Tinubu noted.
In addition, the President acknowledged the Methodist Church’s contributions to nation-building, particularly in the areas of social justice, education, and humanitarian outreach. While congratulating the Abuja Archdiocese on its 40th anniversary, he urged the congregation to reflect on the impact of the church on society and recommit to the values of love and service.
Other prominent figures who spoke at the event included former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Senate President David Mark, and Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
The Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Oliver Ali Aba, also delivered a message during the service, calling for continued support for the government. He expressed optimism that the nation’s current challenges would soon be overcome.
